You are a couple in love. You have come to Shillong, one of the most romantic destination in the world and naturally you do what most lovers do…dancing in the rain of Cherrapunjee.

That is right. Forget the All Saint Cathedral and the Umiam Lake – for those flushed with passion nothing beats the downpour of Cherrapunjee, the wettest place on earth. It may not be your idea of the rain dance, but those who have tried it say there is nothing more romantic and poignant than the shower here.

Romancing the Cherrapunjee Rain in Shillong.

Indeed, the place is famous for orange and honey – the genuine orange flower honey. And there is meat on clothesline! If you are in jolly mood, present this gift of clothesline to your spouse. Red ribbon-like meat slices hanging on the clothesline like red pearls swinging in some designer’s shop.

It is no surprise that Rampyare’s dhaba in Cherrapunjee is usually packed with tourists and local alike. Not only does it serve arguably the best cream tea anywhere in the civilised world, but it enjoys the destination of being Ruskin Bond’s favourite place for a quick cuppa.

To reach Cherrapunjee, you need to stay at Shillong. Royal Heritage Hotel is available  for Rs 7000 per night. This Hotel is an ideal place to discover Indian Institute of Management Shillong and Cathedral of Mary Help of Christians, as well as everything the local area has to offer. St. Anthony’s College and North Eastern Hill University are only a brief drive away.

If you want to see the main market hub of Shillong, then Hotel Centre Point is the best bet at  Rs 5330 per night. The hotel houses both a restaurant and a bar where guests are able to unwind at the end of the day with dinner and a drink.

Another Hotel you can try is Hotel Silk Route  which charges Rs 2400 per night.

There is living root bridges, a unique example of bio-engineering that are not found anywhere else in the world. These bridges are made by pulling and stretching the roots of plant and planting them on the other side of the stream. So enjoy the true spirit of your love in natural privacy!
